SLAITO President Mahen Kariyawasan told the Business Times that both parties have decided that Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and hoteliers would take up this matter on an individual basis.
He noted that already DMCs were in touch with hoteliers and were discussing on bringing about a rate reduction in the country’s hotels. “Hoteliers have realised that the prices they are quoting are too high,” Mr. Kariyawasan said. Reacting to Investment Promotion Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena’s statements in the media on hoteliers charging high prices for rooms in the country, Mr. Kariyawasan believes this could be a precursor to doing away with the minimum rates for Colombo city hotels as well.
